SUMMARY:The Path Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fall reading group of The Path: What Chinese Philosophers Can Teach Us About the Good Life. \nThis reading group will be led by social psychiatrist Dr. Mindy Fullilove. \nMindy says: This class will do a “slow read” of The Path\, a wonderful book by Michael Puett and Christine Gross-Loh. The book has the subtitle “What Chinese Philosophers Can Teach Us About the Good Life.” As a psychiatrist\, I am drawn to this book because it offers us such interesting and unexpected advice for seeing our own situation through an ancient lens. Our slow read will allow us to consider the philosophy as well as the life perspectives offered by this lovely book. \nReading is awesome but optional! \nThis reading group will meet weekly for 6 weeks on Mondays from October 7th through November 11th. The meetings will be hybrid: in person at Hale House (47 Cleveland Street\, Orange NJ) and on Zoom. \n  \nRegister here for the reading group.  \n

To share this experience with everyone\, Aditi has been teacher training at the Dharma Yoga Center in New York\, learning under Shri Dharma Mitra. \nAs part of her teacher training\, Aditi is offering free yoga classes. SUMMARY:Reckoning With Root Shock Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 23rd\, 1pm-2pm ET. \nBetween 1949 – 1973\, 2\,532 federal urban renewal projects were carried out in 993 US cities. Seventy-five percent of the people displaced were people of color\, leading to James Baldwin’s famous remark\, “Urban renewal is Negro removal.” In honor of the 20th anniversary of Dr. Mindy Fullilove’s book Root Shock: How Tearing Up City Neighborhoods Hurts America and What We Can Do About It\, this webinar will revisit the importance of understanding the social and cultural impacts of neighborhood disruption and the displacement of communities of color that has occurred since the federal urban renewal projects. \nIn this webinar\, Dr. Mindy Fullilove will engage in conversation with community development practitioners to discuss how the learnings from Root Shock can help us move towards more sustainable and democratic communities. The path forward must include a reckoning with our past as well as taking up the tasks of reweaving the social fabric and reknitting our physical spaces. Join Molly Rose Kaufman at the University of Orange\, Terri Baltimore at the Hill District and Evelyn Burnett at ThirdSpace Action Lab in an engaging conversation around how understanding the history of community displacement and its impacts on neighborhoods’ physical\, psychological\, cultural and economic well-being can help us navigate the pressures that cities are facing across the country and the world. \nThis webinar is hosted by Next City and sponsored by The Kresge Foundation. \nLearn more about the speakers and register for the webinar here.

SUMMARY:Root Shock Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:UofOrange is hosting this 4 week free online reading group of Mindy Fullilove’s “Root Shock”. Join us each week on Mondays from January 16th to February 6th at 6:30PM EST. \nRegister online HERE \nRoot Shock examines 3 different U.S. cities to unmask the crippling results of decades-old disinvestment in communities of color and the urban renewal practices that ultimately destroyed these neighborhoods for the advantage of developers and the elite. \nLike a sequel to the prescient warnings of urbanist Jane Jacobs\, Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove reveals the disturbing effects of decades of insensitive urban renewal projects on communities of color. For those whose homes and neighborhoods were bulldozed\, the urban modernization projects that swept America starting in 1949 were nothing short of an assault. Vibrant city blocks – places rich in culture – were torn apart by freeways and other invasive development\, devastating the lives of poor residents. \nFullilove passionately describes the profound traumatic stress- the “root shock”that results when a neighborhood is demolished. She estimates that federal and state urban renewal programs\, spearheaded by business and real estate interests\, destroyed 1\,600 African American districts in cities across the United States. But urban renewal didn’t just disrupt black communities: it ruined their economic health and social cohesion\, stripping displaced residents of their sense of place as well. It also left big gashes in the centers of cities that are only now slowly being repaired. \nFocusing on the Hill District of Pittsburgh\, the Central Ward in Newark\, and the small Virginia city of Roanoke\, Dr. Fullilove argues powerfully against policies of displacement. Understanding the damage caused by root shock is crucial to coping with its human toll and helping cities become whole. \nBuy a copy here: https://nyupress.org/9781613320198/root-shock/

Through story and song we will remember NJ’s native son – a renaissance man whose life work explored the relationship between music\, solidarity\, and freedom – and who spent time with civil rights organizers in Orange in the late 1950s. We strongly recommend wearing a face mask and taking a Covid-19 rapid test before attending. Recomendamos ampliamente usar una máscara facial y hacerse una prueba rápida de Covid-19 antes de asistir.

SUMMARY:CDC's COVID Collapse: Organizing for a People's Response (part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for part 2 of “CDC’s Covid Collapse”. We will split into three working groups. See below for more information and sign up here. \n—- \nCandidate Joe Biden denounced the Trump administration’s handling of the COVID pandemic. And with good reason. In less than a year\, half-a-million Americans were killed by both the virus and the negligent response. Despite running on a platform to get the outbreak under control\, and even now with a vaccine in hand\, by next spring the new administration will bear responsibility for another half-a-million passing. \nLike its predecessor\, the Biden administration has repeatedly tried to turn the page on COVID\, largely in the service of reopening the economy first\, rather than intervening into this major public health emergency at the scale it requires. Under both administrations\, the CDC has repeatedly bent the science of COVID against a full-spectrum response and increasingly with the aim of sending millions back to work and school under what have proven to remain dangerous conditions. That kind of anti-public health approach is unacceptable. \nWhat does a people’s response to such a dereliction of public health duty look like? Join our panel of epidemiologists and community leaders for a discussion of what an exit out of the COVID trap requires. Help set up working groups to push for specific interventions that are proven to help both control the COVID outbreak and mitigate the burdens that arise from these intercessions. Despair alone is not an option. We need to act!
