SUMMARY:Zapatista Stories For Dreaming An-Other World
DESCRIPTION:Zapatista Stories For Dreaming An-Other World\nThursday\, August 6th 2026\n6:30pm-8:30pm at The HUUB \nStories and storytelling have been a compelling feature of the Zapatista movement since its appearance in 1994. The impulse behind a recent translation of Zapatista stories by an activist translators’ collective will frame the presentation. A brief conceptual summary of the history and ideas of the Zapatista movement will follow\, including the 30th anniversary celebration January 2024\, and the spate of communiqués that preceded it\, announcing a new turn in the Zapatista struggle. Finally\, we will consider [collectively] why the Zapatistas continue to inspire so many 34 years after their emergence. \nMargaret Cerullo is professor emerita of sociology and feminist studies at Hampshire College in Amherst\, Massachusetts. She has been involved in one way or another with the Zapatista movement since its public emergence in January of 1994\, including organizing field study courses in Chiapas for more than 20 years. She is a member of the Lightning Collective that produced the book Stories for Dreaming An-Other World (PM Press). She attended the 2024 commemoration of the Zapatistas 30th in Chiapas; and visited Chiapas most recently in June of this year. \n  \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Autonomous Spaces: Sergio Campos
DESCRIPTION:Autonomous Spaces Series: Sergio Campos\nThursday\, August 13th\, 6:30pm-8pm \nPlease join us as we welcome Sergio Campos for our autonomous spaces series: \nMy name is Sergio Campos and I am a proud Lenca descendant from a place originally known as Cuzcatlan\, the land of precious stones now known as the country of El Salvador. My thirst for knowledge\, connection\, and curiosity started at a very young age\, and my travels have brought me to many different places. I have spent years cultivating community in many communal spaces through our connection to ancestral foods\, resilience\, language and art traditions and continue that work here on Turtle Island and many other places like Tonacatepeque. The best thing I can do to express my love and connection to these lands is to share my knowledge and experiences while constantly learning and gaining wisdom and insight from the amazing people that I continue to meet all around me. To me\, staying rooted and grounded in my traditions is a lifelong practice that constantly inspires me to connect all of us to the past\, present\, and future we are creating together. \n  \nREGISTER HERE
