SUMMARY:What's the Story? A Memoir Writing Class - Winter 2025
DESCRIPTION:10-week virtual memoir class offered by UofO\, taught by developmental editor Susan Hasho \nThe class is held on Wednesdays 11:00am to 12:15pm on Zoom\, and will run January 15 – March 19\, 2025. \nWhat’s the Story? A Memoir Writing Class \nDo you have some stories you’d like to tell? There may be stories about your life that you want to tell your children or grandchildren\, perhaps about another country or culture you came from or your parents came from. Was there an experience that changed your life or your neighborhood? How about if you were in the military and you want to share something about that? If you have a desire to share or describe anything that you are fascinated by\, care about or even want to change\, this class is a place to do that.\n \nFormat \nWhat’s the Story is a 10-week writing class that intends to provoke\, free and guide anyone to write a memoir that reflects their own unique voice and life experience. This is a workshop-style interactive course. Participants will take turns sharing their work and have opportunities to receive feedback and guidance from the instructor and the other participants. There is also time to discuss technical skills\, confront creative blocks\, and set writing goals. All writing is done outside of class at your own pace. \nLike all UofO events\, this class is offered for free\, but your tax-deductible donation goes a long way to cover the costs of delivering the course. \nPlease register for the class here. \nSusan Hasho is a developmental editor which is an editor involved in the mysterious process of enabling writers and anyone interested in writing to find their way through the maze of expectations\, judgment and even fear to find the true heart of what they want to write. She has trained and worked as an actor and writer\, and moved into the advertising field to work as a copy editor for advertising agencies and Fortune 500 companies. She began working with writers several years ago as an editor and it became her goal to teach a writing class that would enable people to be as free of self-criticism and inhibiting expectations as possible in order to write clearly and openly with joy.

SUMMARY:Listening with the Prophetic Ear
DESCRIPTION:The HUUB Community Campus will hold a special event on January 20th\, Martin Luther King Day. \nBishop William Barber\, leader of Repairers of the Breach and the Poor People’s Campaign\, has called us to a special task on January 20th: listening to the new President’s Inaugural Address with the “prophetic ear.” Bishop Barber proposes that we need to pay careful attention as all the promises of the campaign season are left behind and the new administration begins to take steps. By our careful attention\, we can discern which of the myriad things the President-elect has said he would are now actually on the agenda. \nWe will convene at The HUUB at 11:30am for an opening session\, “Clearing Our Listening.” We will talk about what it means to listen with the “prophetic ear.” We will listen to some opening words from Faith+Works UU Congregation minister Rev Dr Edgar Rivera Colon. \nAt noon\, we will turn our attention to lunch and the inauguration. We will listen to the President’s remarks with care and concern. Following his remarks\, we will debrief. \nWe will reconvene at 7pm to hear Bishop Barber and colleagues share with us what they heard and what they see as next steps. Dinner will be served. \nPlease RSVP to info@universityoforange.org for one or both of these events. That way\, we can be sure to put your name in the pot. If you would like to join virtually\, please register for the Zoom link here.

SUMMARY:Remembering Rosa
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 6th for the 9th annual Remembering Rosa: A Concert for Peace. This year we are in Heywood Avenue’s auditorium (421 Heywood Ave.)\, and have a line up featuring music and dance from the Remembering Rosa Community Choir\, Ebenezer Baptist Church choir\, Heywood Avenue Choir\, East Orange Dance\, Concepts Dance Academy\, and the Steel Pan Ensemble of the Oranges. \nBrief remarks will be made by Dr. Mindy Fullilove (OHS Class of ’68)\, Rev. Bill Rutherford\, and Dr. Khemani Gibson (OHS Class of ’10). Three special “HonDoc” awards will be presented to three community leaders. \nThe concert is free and will also be live-streamed to University of Orange’s facebook and youtube pages.\nRemembering Rosa celebrates the legacy of Rosa Parks\, as an activist and a life-long learner\, and the feat of solidarity that led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott being organized and implemented just 4 days after her act of civil disobedience. Our concert brings together choirs from around Orange and Essex County to sing together in her memory\, but also to learn about and honor local histories of community organizing.

SUMMARY:The Path Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fall reading group of The Path: What Chinese Philosophers Can Teach Us About the Good Life. \nThis reading group will be led by social psychiatrist Dr. Mindy Fullilove. \nMindy says: This class will do a “slow read” of The Path\, a wonderful book by Michael Puett and Christine Gross-Loh. The book has the subtitle “What Chinese Philosophers Can Teach Us About the Good Life.” As a psychiatrist\, I am drawn to this book because it offers us such interesting and unexpected advice for seeing our own situation through an ancient lens. Our slow read will allow us to consider the philosophy as well as the life perspectives offered by this lovely book. \nReading is awesome but optional! \nThis reading group will meet weekly for 6 weeks on Mondays from October 7th through November 11th. The meetings will be hybrid: in person at Hale House (47 Cleveland Street\, Orange NJ) and on Zoom. \n  \nRegister here for the reading group.  \n

SUMMARY:What's the Story? A Memoir Writing Class
DESCRIPTION:10-week virtual memoir class offered by UofO\, taught by developmental editor Susan Hasho \nThe class is held on Wednesdays 11:00am to 12:15pm\, and will run 18 September – 20 November\, 2024. \nDo you have some stories you’d like to tell? There may be stories about your life that you want to tell your children or grandchildren\, perhaps about another country or culture you came from or your parents came from. Was there an experience that changed your life or your neighborhood? How about if you were in the military and you want to share something about that? If you have a desire to share or describe anything that you are fascinated by\, care about or even want to change\, this class is a place to do that. \nFormat \nWhat’s the Story is a 10-week writing class that intends to provoke\, free and guide anyone to write a memoir that reflects their own unique voice and life experience. This is a workshop-style interactive course. Participants will take turns sharing their work and have opportunities to receive feedback and guidance from the instructor and the other participants. There is also time to discuss technical skills\, confront creative blocks\, and set writing goals. All writing is done outside of class at your own pace. \n  \nSusan Hasho is a developmental editor which is an editor involved in the mysterious process of enabling writers and anyone interested in writing to find their way through the maze of expectations\, judgment and even fear to find the true heart of what they want to write. \n  \nRegister here for this event. \n
